Botox

BOTOX EXPLAINED

Botox® (Botulinum Type A Toxin)

Botox® is an injectable cosmetic treatment that must be administered by a trained nurse or doctor. Skin Institute’s team of registered nurses and doctors are the experts you can trust to take care of your skin’s individual needs.

What is Botox®

Botox® is a natural purified protein that temporarily relaxes your muscles to soften wrinkles and lines. Botox® has been used for over 20 years and is one of the most studied medications ever, with over 10,000 published scientific studies to date. It’s a very safe, popular and effective treatment for wrinkles with millions of treatments performed worldwide every year.

What can Botox® do for me?

Botox® works especially well to soften frown lines, crow’s feet and horizontal forehead lines. It can also be used 'off label' to lift the corners of the mouth, smooth your chin, slim your lower face, relax your neck bands and define your jawline.

Often people are concerned they will look “frozen” after treatment. We understand – we don’t like that look either! At Skin Institute, we favour a natural look that retains movement if you wish, using lower doses and personalizing your treatment to retain warmth and character in your face.

Is Botox® suitable for everyone?

Almost everyone is suitable for Botox®, however there are some cautions. As with any medical cosmetic treatment, we advise against pregnant or breast-feeding women having treatment. We would not treat you with Botox® if you had a muscle weakness disorder like Motor Neurone disease or Myasthenia Gravis. Book a consultation with our experienced appearance medicine nurse to find out if Botox® is right for you.

How much downtime is there after treatment?

Botox® is a walk-in, walk-out lunchtime procedure – no-one will be able to tell. Immediately after treatment you might notice a tiny pink bump where the needle has been introduced, which lasts about 10 minutes and can easily be covered with makeup before you leave the treatment room. Botox® takes 3-4 days to take effect, with full smoothing and rejuvenation appearing after 14 days. Occasionally you might get a small bruise which won’t appear until the day after treatment. Bruises can be covered with concealer while they fade.

Does it hurt?

Yes, most people agree it does sting a little bit, but it’s very momentary and is over before you know it. We use lots of techniques to minimize any discomfort, including music, breathing, ice, tapping and distraction.

Juvederm

JUVEDERM DERMAL FILLERS EXPLAINED

Do you feel your face looks tired and saggy? Dermal fillers like Juvederm® and Restylane® are the most effective way to improve facial sagging, short of surgery. They can be gently injected under the skin to restore your lips to a youthful shape, soften lip lines, reduce hollows under your eyes, make facial folds shallower and even enhance your chin.

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are clear gels made from a hyaluronan, a natural carbohydrate already present in your skin that declines with age. Hyaluronan is a powerful hydrator and helps collagen formation. Dermal fillers physically sculpt the face, enhancing facial contour and reducing folds and wrinkles.

Many women fear looking overdone with dermal filler.  We understand your concerns – we don’t like the unnatural look either.  At Skin Institute we favour the understated, natural look which we achieve through a holistic facial assessment and gradual treatment to restore the natural contours of your face.

What can dermal fillers do for me?

As we age we lose “volume” in our faces due to aging changes in the fat and bone deep under the skin. This leads to the overlying skin forming folds, making us look tired and sad.  Placing dermal filler at key points in the face can restore volume for a refreshed, happier look with reduced jowls and sag. We can also enhance your lips, cheeks, and chin. Dermal fillers are a simple, safe way to improve your look.

Are they suitable for everyone?

Mostly, but as with any medical cosmetic treatment there are some cautions. We advise against pregnant or breast-feeding women having treatment, and we won’t treat clients who have previously had permanent filler, as it can trigger problems. And if you are unwell with a cold or flu, we prefer not to treat until you’ve recovered. Book a consultation with one of our experienced appearance medicine nurses to find out if dermal fillers are right for you.

Does it hurt and is there any downtime after treatment?

Dermal filler contains a local anesthetic, meaning most people find placement surprisingly comfortable. If you wish we can use numbing cream or even local anesthetic blocks for maximum comfort. You can expect some redness and swelling, or the possibility of a bruise which may last up to two weeks. Concealer can cover any bruising you may experience while it fades.
